The Radio Station
The College Radio Station, WFTU, the “Voice of Five Towns College”, is a federal Communications Commission licensed commercial radio station. The station can be heard on the radio at WFTU 1570AM and streaming on-line on the College website, www.ftc.edu. WFTU is a student-run radio station with on-air personalities, news reporters, music directors, program directors, station managers, technicians and more. Students who are interested in being news reporters for the radio station have the opportunity to use the Associated Press wires, which are used in most radio and TV stations. Students can have their own sports, talk or news show as well. WFTU’s main broadcast studio is located on the College campus, a convenient way for students to have hands-on broadcasting experience. The transmitter and auxiliary are located in Riverhead, New York. The station is licensed to serve the east end of Long Island from Manorville to Montauk, with 1,000 Kw of power during the day and 599K at night.
The College newspaper, The Record, is issued periodically and features student-written articles about campus events and activities, entertainment and news. Journalism students are expected to contribute articles for the newspaper as part of their writing experience.
The College Yearbook, produced by interested students with the cooperation of a faculty advisor, serves as a record in pictures and words of each years graduating class and as a vehicle for the literary, artistic and photographic talents of all students. Students in the Journalism and Creative Writing classes generally contribute to this publication.
