Sol Negrin, Distinguished Professor in the Film/Video Division at Five Towns College, will receive the President’s Award from the American Society of Cinematographers on February 27th at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
The President’s Award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to advancing the art and craft of filmmaking. “Sol Negrin has not only made an impact with his six decade career as a cinematographer," stated ASC President Michael Goi, “but his constant efforts to organize industry events and teach the next generation of image makers their craft is selfless and without compare.”
Professor Negrin, in response, remarked, “Receiving this prestigious award is a great honor. To be recognized by one’s peers for the work you have done throughout your life is one of the highest compliments you can receive. The day I was accepted as a member of the American Society of Cinematographers was one of the most memorable times of my life. I am humbled and honored by this recognition.”
Professor Negrin has shared his wealth of experience and expertise with students and aspiring filmmakers through mentorships, seminars, demonstrations and speaking engagements. For the last decade, he has been teaching Advanced Cinematography at Five Towns College, where he earned an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts degree in 2002. Five Towns College Film/Video Division Chair Robert DiGiacomo noted that, “Sol knows everybody in the business and everybody knows Sol. His comprehension of the art of cinematography and its processes is extensive and he is always willing to share his knowledge and expertise with film students and colleagues in the film industry.” Dean Martinez, filmmaker, instructor and Operations Manager at the College remarked, “I am lucky enough to be Sol Negrin’s teaching assistant and over the years I have watched Sol help so many students advance themselves in the professional world of filmmaking. He amazes me with his knowledge of cinema from silent films to the latest technologies like Hi-Definition and 3D.”
