GARDEN CITY, NY — FTC Mass Communication students attended the Fair Media Council “Real & Powerful Program” at the Garden City Hotel on November 28, 2018. The purpose of this event and the Fair Media Council’s mission is to not only have an open dialogue with multiple media outlets, but also to advocate for quality news as they bridge the gap between audiences, the news media, and the public.
The event kicked off with a breakfast and headliner interview with Newsday Owner & CEO, Patrick Dolan. He began the event by talking about the current state of multimedia journalism and how it can be better used to reach out to the public. Mr. Dolan spoke directly with attendees following his interview and gave students encouragement about starting careers in media.
The day-long program presented various panels where the students and other media professionals heard insights on how the media and PR firms work together with local, regional, and national news organizations. Panelists who spoke included Newsday’s Jaime Herzlich, former News 12 Anchor Drew Scott, Aisha al-Muslim, an award-winning journalist for the Wall Street Journal, and photojournalist Howard Schnapp. All these panelists and many more gave their insight into what it takes to make it in the world of multimedia journalism and how to have a better relationship with the public.
Sponsors such as FOX 5 also had displays where attendees could discuss internship and job postings. The Fair Media Council event provided students with a great opportunity to network with “Real and Powerful” news leaders who work hard to shape the way news is received in the digital age.
