SISTER ACT SUCCESS: PHOTOS & REVIEW

Sister Act, the latest musical from the Five Towns College Theatre Arts Division, premiered on November 17th in the Performing Arts Center to a big turnout. Directed by Mitchell Walker, with Music Direction by Melissa Coyle, and Choreography by Kev Burns, the musical comedy about sisterhood is based on the hit 1992 movie Sister Act starring Whoopi Goldberg. 

The show has singing, dancing, and a lot of clapping to the beat. You’ll feel like you are attending mass during this intriguing and spectacular production. Interestingly, the orchestra is incorporated into the show by being featured on the set. Plus, the show has a fabulous kickline that features dancing nuns. 

Shadae Graham, an FTC Senior Musical Theatre major, was part of the ensemble, playing a nun, homeless woman, and bar patron. “It was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it because all of us created a bond altogether, and it was really amazing,” said Graham.

Cece Morin, who plays Goldberg’s lead role of Deloris Van Cartier, keeps the audience wanting more as she faces the ultimate dilemma of turning in her boyfriend, who shot somebody. Morin talked about her role on the FTC Theatre Arts Instagram, saying, “Not only am I having a blast, but I’ve discovered so much about myself and the importance of sisterhood and overall relationships in this musical.” Deloris’ decision to go to the police jeopardizes her life. She then encounters a cop named Eddie, played by the amazing Joshua Credle, who tries to protect her by placing her in a convent disguised as a nun during Christmastime. There, a misfit must learn to blend in and deal with unexpected love and friendship while trying to stay alive.

The crowd absolutely could not get enough of the performances. There was tons of clapping and laughing, which seemed like were written into the production. There were also actor-audience interactions amplified by the floor in front of the stage being part of the set. 

“It was a fun experience. I enjoyed the heck out of Sister Act. I enjoy the character that I have. It was a fun experience,” said Paul Chahfe, an FTC Senior Theatre student who plays Joey. When asked about what went into the making of Sister Act, Chahfre said, “Honestly, what went into the show is just observing things like Good Fellas and The Godfather. And also just being myself.” 

Sister Act received a standing ovation from the crowd when the play concluded.

Alex McLaughlin summed up the experience by saying, “I thought the play was great. I’m a Musical Theatre major, so I have a lot of friends in it. I was working the spotlight myself, so it was a good time. I’m glad I got to be a part of it, and my friends did a wonderful job like they always do.”
